Organizations that have assisted us on our journey:
Operation Homefront ~ Although we have not applied directly to OH for assistance, we have used them to get to other resources. The 2 following organizations have assisted us and were brought to us through Operation Homefront. OH offers many sources of support and assistance to active duty military families and wounded warrior families as well.
Wounded Warrior Wives ~ This organization has been a tremendous support system to me as a caregiver. I have attended a retreat with other wounded warrior wives that was sponsored by this amazing organization. It gives us a place online to gather for support so we are not alienated in our journey.
Home Depot Foundation ~ This generous foundation gave us a new roof on our house! I cannot begin to tell you the relief that came from having a firm, strong roof over our heads and that was all thanks to this foundation.
Rebuilding Together Tri-Cities ~ This organization, with the help of an Officer Class from Fort Lee, came and installed hand rails and extra safety bars in all of our bathrooms and staircases and replaced a window.
Sportable ~ This organization is involved at the VA medical facility that my husband where my husband receives his medical care. They have hooked him up with a recumbant bike and have helped him to get involved with some physical activity again in a way that he is able to.
Wounded Heroes Hunt-Parsons, WV ~ I do not have any weblinks to this organization and I am still working on making sure I have the correct credit where credit is due. However, I did want to notate that this was a huge turning point in his recovery with this hunting trip. It allowed him to open doors that he thought were closed and to once again take part in an outdoor activity that is enjoyable.
The Lost Brigade Project ~ This organization is doing great things for veterans. My husband participated in their 1st Annual Wounded Veteran Marksmanship Competition and loved every minute of the weekend. This allowed him to take part in an activity with fellow servicemembers that he thought would be lost forever after being medically retired. He will be taking part again this year and hopes to participate in a Applachian Trail Hike they are trying to organize. They are bringing awareness and support to homeless veterans and are supporting veterans of all eras in a very honorable way.
American Veterans with Brain Injuries ~ This organization was one that I 1st had any contact with. They sent my husband some dog tags and a card to keep in his wallet to identify him as a veteran with a brain injury and a place to list his meds in case of a sticky situation. This was a big safety net for the both of us to have when he 1st started venturing out on an independent life again.
